Trinamool state spokesperson Kunal Ghosh countered the opposition's claim and said: "Malbazar is definitely an unfortunate incident and we are saddened by the death of eight people. However, it has no connection with the carnival, which was a celebration of Unesco's Intangible Cultural Heritage tag to Durga puja." Chief minister Mamata Banerjee, Unesco representatives and diplomats of several countries were among the audience at the event.
