India Bans Apps of Chinese Origin

Amidst the tensions on the LAC (Line of Actual Control) between India and China, India has made an unprecedented move of banning 59 Chinese apps on Monday, 29 July 2020.

There have been raging concerns on various aspects related to the data safety and security of 130 crore people of the country. These issues have become a concern for the safety of the Indian citizens over the last few years since India emerged as the primary market in the digital space and leading innovator in the technological advancements. Such apps also pose a threat to the sovereignty and security of the country. The Ministry of Information Technology had received reports from various sources about the misuse of some mobile apps for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting the data to servers that are located outside the country in an unauthorized manner. These apps are available on both platforms like Android and iOS. The Ministry of Home Affairs, Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center had also raised its concerns and shared an exhaustive list of apps and its recommendation to block these apps. Apart from the government agencies raising their concerns about the apps, The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) also received many concerns from the public citing their concerns regarding the security of data and breach of privacy.
